Chinese film No More Bets tops the worldwide box office

No More Bets dethroned last weekend’s topper Meg 2 on the worldwide weekend box office chart with $87.97 million for a worldwide total of $231.97 million. The Chinese crime-drama, directed by Shen Ao, starring Lay Zhang and Gina Jin is based on a true story of a computer programmer and a female model who are lured by a fake overseas recruitment ad and find themselves trapped in a foreign country. No More Bets is the No. 1 film in China since its release on 8 August (Tuesday).
Barbie has grossed an impressive $78.8 million in its fourth weekend, retaining is second position from last weekend. The comedy-drama, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has grossed $1.18 billion at the worldwide box office. Barbie continued to lead the North American box office chart for the fourth consecutive weekend with $33.7 million for a total of $526.3 million.
Last weekend’s leader Meg 2: The Trench has been demoted the third position. The shark sequel has grossed $56.4 million in its second weekend, registering over 60% fall from its opening weekend, for a worldwide total of $256.93 million against an estimated $130 million budget. The film, directed by Ben Wheatley, starring Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels and Cliff Curtis, earned $12.7 million at the North American box office.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role, has grossed $81.51 million in its fourth weekend, registering a drop of just 31% from its second weekend, for a total gross of $649.02 million. Released alongside Barbie in a clash referred to as Barbenheimer, the R-rated biographical drama, also starring Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh is the second highest-grossing film in North America over the weekend with $18.8 million, taking its domestic tally to $264.26 million.
Animation sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, directed by Jeff Rowe, grossed $26.15 million in its second weekend for a total of $94.68 million.
Chinese epic film Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, the first instalment in the Fengshen trilogy directed by ethnic Mongol director Wuershan, based on Xu Zhonglin’s 16th century novel Investiture of the Gods, grossed $23.9 million in its fourth weekend for a total of $275.59 million. The cast includes Fei Xiang, Li Xuejian, Huang Bo, Yu Yosh, Luke Chen, Na Ran, Ci Sha, Xia Yu, Chen Kun, Yuan Quan and Eric Yang Le.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One earned $15.56 million is its fifth weekend for a worldwide total of $522.45 million. The action-thriller is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Tom Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt, Hayley Atwell in her Mission Impossible debut, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby – all of them reprising her roles from previous Mission Impossible films along with Esai Morales, playing the antagonist. In the film, Hunt races against time to find a mysterious “key” before it is found by The Entity, a powerful rogue AI (Esai Morales). In the USA and Canada, the film grossed $4.66 million for an underwhelming domestic tally of $159.55 million.
Biographical sports drama Gran Turismo, directed by Neill Blomkamp, starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, Emelia Hartford, Geri Halliwell Horner, Djimon Hounsou and Josha Stradowski grossed $10.7 million from international previews. The film will release in the United States on 25 August.
Australian horror film Talk to Me, directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, grossed $9.82 million in its third weekend, taking its tally to $47.05 million. In the film, a group of teenagers discover they are able to contact spirits using a mysterious embalmed hand, only for one of them to take things too far. The cast includes Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson and Alexandria Steffensen.
South Korean film Concrete Utopia, directed by Um Tae-hwa, starring Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon and Park Bo-young has grossed $9.74 million over its extended opening weekend.
