Oppenheimer leads the weekend box office chart for the first time since release

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role, topped the worldwide weekend box office chart for the first time since release with $38.12 million gross in its sixth weekend. Released alongside Barbie in a clash referred to as Barbenheimer, the R-rated film, also starring Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh, has grossed $777.19 million at the worldwide box office. The biographical drama is the fourth highest-grossing film in North America over the weekend with $9 million, taking its domestic tally past the $300 million mark. The film is set to release in China on 30 August.
Barbie has grossed an impressive $35.3 million in its sixth weekend, retaining its second position from last weekend. The comedy-drama, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has grossed $1.34 billion at the worldwide box office. In North America, Barbie earned $17.1 million for a domestic total of $594.8 million.
No More Bets has been dethroned to the third position by Oppenheimer and Barbie. The Chinese crime-drama, has raked in $58.06 million in its third weekend, taking its tally to $467.58 million. The film, directed by Shen Ao, starring Lay Zhang and Gina Jin is based on a true story of a computer programmer and a female model who are lured by a fake overseas recruitment ad and find themselves trapped in a foreign country. No More Bets is the No. 1 film in China since its release on 8 August (Tuesday).
Biographical sports drama Gran Turismo, directed by Neill Blomkamp, starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, Emelia Hartford, Geri Halliwell Horner, Djimon Hounsou and Josha Stradowski grossed $28.3 million for a worldwide total of $53.8 million. The film released in the United States on 25 August and topped the domestic box office with $17.3 million.
Blue Bettle dropped 47% in its second weekend, grossing $22.76 million for a worldwide total of $81.8 million. The superhero film, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, starring Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and George Lopez is at No. 3 in USA and Canada with $12.76 million.
Meg 2: The Trench has grossed $20.3 million in its third weekend for a total gross of $352.53 million against an estimated $130 million budget. The shark sequel, directed by Ben Wheatley, starring Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels and Cliff Curtis, earned $5.1 million at the North American box office for a domestic total of $74.43 million.
Chinese comedy-drama Papa, directed by Su Liang, grossed $14.88 million in its second weekend, taking its tally to $58.63 million.
Chinese epic film Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, the first instalment in the Fengshen trilogy directed by ethnic Mongol director Wuershan, based on Xu Zhonglin’s 16th century novel Investiture of the Gods, grossed $11.13 million in its sixth weekend for a total of $335.45 million. The cast includes Fei Xiang, Li Xuejian, Huang Bo, Yu Yosh, Luke Chen, Na Ran, Ci Sha, Xia Yu, Chen Kun, Yuan Quan and Eric Yang Le.
Animation sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, directed by Jeff Rowe, grossed $10.3 million in its third weekend for a total of $135.14 million.
American comedy Strays, directed by Josh Greenbaum, grossed $6.98 million in its second weekend, taking its tally to $21.38 million. The film follows an abandoned dog (voiced by Will Ferrell) who teams up with several strays (voiced by Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher and Randall Park) to get revenge on his abusive owner (Will Forte).
