Tom Cruise’s latest instalment of Mission Impossible dominates the worldwide box office

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One debuted with $235 million at the global box office – $13 million short of Tom Cruise’s last year’s blockbuster Top Gun Maverick’s opening weekend gross of $248 million. The action-thriller is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Tom Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt, Hayley Atwell in her Mission Impossible debut, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby – all of them reprising her roles from previous Mission Impossible films along with Esai Morales, playing the antagonist. In the film, Hunt races against time to find a mysterious “key” before it is found by The Entity, a powerful rogue AI (Esai Morales).
Chinese drama Never Say Never, directed by and starring Wang Bao Qiang, amassed $45.87 million in its second weekend for a total of $207.58 million. The film is yet to release outside China.
Pixar’s Elemental, directed by Peter Sohn, earned $36.9 million in its fifth weekend. The animated romantic comedy-drama, made with an estimated budget of $200 million, has grossed $311.68 million so far and is on verge of emerging as a sleeper hit following a lukewarm opening week.
Chinese animated action-adventure Chang An San Wan Li, directed by Junwei Xie and Jing Zou, is the third highest-grossing film over the weekend with $43.75 million, taking its tally to $94.86 million.
Last weekend’s topper Insidious: The Red Door, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson in his directorial debut, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins grossed $34.5 million in its second weekend, registering a 47% drop from its opening weekend. Made with an estimated budget of $20 million, the fifth and final instalment in the Insidious horror franchise released to mixed reviews but has grossed $122.58 million and is a profitable venture for its distributor Sony Pictures.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise, directed by James Mangold, starring Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen and Antonio Banderas grossed $29 million across 53 territories in its third weekend, taking its tally to $302.35 million. The action-adventure film, made with an estimated budget of $300 million, has released to mixed reviews from critics and is unlikely to reach its estimated breakeven figure of $600 million.
Sound of Freedom, directed by Alejandro Monteverde, starring Jim Caviezel, Mira Sorvino, and Bill Camp earned $27.21 million in its second weekend. The action film, which released on 4 July, has grossed $85.49 million so far against an estimated $15 million budget, emerging as a jackpot for its distributor Angel Studios. Sound of Freedom follows Jim Caviezel, playing a former government agent, who embarks on a mission to save children from a sex trafficking ring in Columbia.
Chinese film Lost in the Stars, directed by Liu Xiang and Cui Rui, raked in $16.37 million in its third weekend for a total gross of $468.57 million. The mystery-thriller is the remake of the 1990 Soviet film Trap for Lonely Man and follows a man (Zhu Yi Long) whose wife (Janice Man) mysteriously disappears during an overseas trip but suddenly turns up, however her husband claims that the woman in front of him is not his wife and seeks the help of a lawyer (Ni Ni) to solve the mystery.
Japanese animated fantasy film How Do You Live?, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, debuted with $13.21 million in its opening weekend, and is the ninth-highest grossing film at the worldwide box office.
Chinese animated fantasy-comedy Oh My School!, directed by Xia Mingze and Yan Kai, grossed $12.82 million over the weekend for a total of $17.83 million.
