The Super Mario Bros. Movie surpasses $1 billion, leads the worldwide box office for the fourth successive weekend

The Super Mario Bros. Movie continued to lead the worldwide box office for the fourth consecutive weekend with $108.31 million gross across 81 territories (including $40 million in North America) and has surpassed the $1 billion milestone. The animated adaptation of Mario is the highest grossing film of 2023 with a worldwide gross of $1,022,473,825.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fifth film since the pandemic to enter the $1 billion club after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.32 billion).

Chinese military film Born to Fly, directed by Liu Xiaoshi and starring Wang Yibo, Hu Jun and Zhou Dongyu, is the second highest-grossing film at the global box office over the weekend with a total gross of $40.72 million across 4 territories.

Chinese road comedy-drama Godspeed, directed by Yi Xiaoxing, amassed $31.67 million in its opening weekend in mainland China.

Evil Dead Rise raked in $31.67 million across 62 territories, including 12.2 million in North America, in its second weekend for a worldwide gross of $86.51 million against an estimated budget of $15 million. The horror film is just over $10 million short of its franchise predecessor Evil Dead (2013), which grossed $97.5 million.

Chinese romantic-drama All These Years, directed by Layla Ji, grossed 18.8 million in its opening weekend in mainland China.

John Wick: Chapter 4 earned $15.1 million including $5 million in North America in its sixth weekend. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård and Laurence Fishburne, the action-thriller has grossed $402.15 million so far and is the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

The First Slam Dunk grossed $12.89 million across 6 territories. The Japanese animated sports film has grossed $232.89 million worldwide and is the seventh highest-grossing Japanese film of all-time.

Dungeons & Dragons grossed $11.2 million at the global box office across 66 territories, including $4.1 million at the North American box office in its fifth weekend. The heist action-comedy film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant has earned $194.16 million so far against its estimated $150 million budget.

Indian period action-drama Ponniyin Selvan 2, directed by Mani Ratnam, grossed $7.46 million across 12 territories including an impressive $3.64 million in North America and $618.2k in the UK and Ireland.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. earned $6.8 million in its opening weekend in North America. Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig and starring Rachel McAdams, Elle Graham, Benny Safdie and Kathy Bates, the coming-of-age period comedy-drama took the third position in the domestic weekend chart and is scheduled to release in more international territories in May.
