The Super Mario Bros. Movie leads the worldwide box office for the second consecutive weekend

The animated adaptation of the popular video game Mario continued to lead the worldwide box office for the second successive weekend with a $181.13 million gross across 72 territories (including $87 million in North America), taking its tally to a whopping $677.95 million despite mixed reviews from critics. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the highest-grossing film based on a video game surpassing Warcraft ($439 million) and is also the highest grossing film of 2023 so far. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black).
John Wick: Chapter 4 dropped just 26% in its fourth weekend to collect $26.52 million across 77 territories including $7.92 million in North America. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård and Laurence Fishburne, the action-thriller has grossed $349.71 million so far and is the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing its predecessor John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) which grossed $327.2 million.
Dungeons & Dragons retained its third position from last weekend with $21.15 million gross at the worldwide box office across 65 territories, including $7.35 million at the North American box office in its third weekend. The heist action-comedy film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant has earned $157.07 million so far.
The Pope’s Exorcist, directed by Julius Avery, starring Russell Crowe raked in $19.55 million across 52 territories in its second weekend, taking its tally to $36.55 million. The horror film opened in North America this weekend and grossed 9.15 million.
Japanese film Suzume also opened in North America this weekend and earned $5M in the territory and $13M in other countries, taking its worldwide gross to $272.40 million across 39 territories. The animated fantasy-adventure, directed by Makoto Shinkai (Your Name), is the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film of all-time.
Biographical sports drama Air, based on true events about the origin of Nike’s Air Jordan shoeline, grossed $13.92 million in its second weekend across 60 territories. Directed by Ben Affleck and starring himself, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis, the film has earned $54.08 million at global box office so far including $33.28 million in North America.
Horror-comedy Renfield, directed by Chris McKay, starring Nicholas Hoult in the titular role, Nicholas Cage as Count Dracula and Awkwafina grossed $10.03 million in its opening weekend across 47 territories, including $7.77 million in North America.
Chinese film Ride On, directed by Larry Yang, starring Jackie Chan grossed $6.58 million across 6 territories, taking its tally to $23.32 million. The adventure-comedy follows a fading stuntman (Jackie Chan) who along with his horse becomes a media sensation overnight after their fight with debt collectors goes viral.
French film The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, directed by Martin Bourboulon, starring François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï, Romain Duris, and Eva Green grossed $6.25 million across 21 territories in its second weekend, taking its worldwide gross to $16.55 million.
Chinese drama Hachiko grossed $4.96 million in its third weekend, taking its tally to $35.19 million. The film, directed by Ang Xu, revolves around a dog waiting for the return of its owner even 10 years after the owner’s death.
