The Super Mario Bros. Movie dominates the worldwide box office for the third consecutive weekend

The Super Mario Bros. Movie continued to lead the worldwide box office for the third consecutive weekend with $128.94 million gross across 79 territories (including $58.23 million in North America), taking its tally to a whopping $871.83 million. The animated adaptation of Mario is currently the highest-grossing film based on a video game surpassing Warcraft ($439 million) and is also the highest grossing film of 2023 so far.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). When the animation film reaches $1 billion globally, it will be only the fourth film since the pandemic to achieve that milestone after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.31 billion).

The First Slam Dunk amassed a whopping $55.2 million in China over its four-day extended opening weekend, leading the territory’s box office. The Japanese animated sports film has grossed $210.8 million worldwide, including over $97 million grossed in Japan.

Evil Dead Rise opened with an impressive $23.5 million in North America and $16.8 million in international territories, for a worldwide gross of $40.3 million against an estimated budget of $19 million.

John Wick: Chapter 4 earned $19.3 million across 57 territories including $5.75 million in North America in its fifth weekend. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård and Laurence Fishburne, the action-thriller has grossed $375.1 million so far and is the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing its predecessor John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) which grossed $327.2 million.

Dungeons & Dragons grossed $13.8 million at the global box office across 62 territories, including $5.4 million at the North American box office in its fourth weekend. The heist action-comedy film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant has earned $178 million so far against its estimated $150 million budget.

Biographical sports drama Air, based on true events about the origin of Nike’s Air Jordan shoeline, grossed $9.4 million in its third weekend across 68 territories. Directed by Ben Affleck and starring himself, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis, the film has earned $68.4 million at global box office so far including $41.26 million in North America.

The Pope’s Exorcist, directed by Julius Avery, starring Russell Crowe raked in $9 million across 54 territories in its third weekend, taking its tally to $52 million. The horror film grossed $3.31 million in North America in its second weekend and has earned 14.93 million domestically so far.

Japanese film Suzume grossed $7.8 million, including $1.62 million in North America in its second weekend, taking its worldwide gross to $293.3 million across 40 territories.  The animated fantasy-adventure, directed by Makoto Shinkai (Your Name), is the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film of all-time.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant earned $6.6 million across 7 territories, including $6.28 in the USA and Canada in its opening weekend.

French film The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, directed by Martin Bourboulon, starring François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï, Romain Duris, and Eva Green grossed $5.3 million across 30 territories in its third weekend, taking its worldwide gross to $24 million.
