The Super Mario Bros. Movie amasses a whopping $377.46 million at the global box office

The animated adaptation of the popular video game Mario raked in a massive $377.46 million at the worldwide box office across 71 territories (including $146.36 million in North America) over its five-day extended weekend, setting a new box office record for the highest opening weekend gross for an animated film. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, The Super Mario Bros. Movie revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black).
John Wick: Chapter 4 dropped 43% in its third weekend to collect $36.1 million across 76 territories including $14.6 million in North America. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård and Laurence Fishburne, the action-thriller has grossed $306.06 million so far and is the second highest-grossing film in the franchise after its predecessor John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) which grossed $327.2 million.
Dungeons & Dragons is pushed to the third position with $30 million gross at the worldwide box office across 62 territories, including $14.5 million at the North American box office in its second weekend. The heist action-comedy film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant has earned $124.07 million so far.
Biographical sports drama Air, based on true events about the origin of Nike’s Air Jordan shoeline, grossed $30.71 million over its 5-day extended opening weekend across 60 territories. Directed by Ben Affleck and starring himself, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis, the film earned $14.46 million at the North American domestic box office.
Japanese film Suzume continued its impressive performance with $11.78 million across seven territories taking its worldwide gross to $248.51 million. The animated fantasy-adventure, directed by Makoto Shinkai (Your Name), is now the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film of all-time after overtaking One Piece Film: Red (2022), which earned $246.5 million globally.
Chinese film Ride On, directed by Larry Yang, starring Jackie Chan grossed $11.78 million across 4 territories. The adventure-comedy follows a fading stuntman (Jackie Chan) who along with his horse becomes a media sensation overnight after their fight with debt collectors goes viral.
Chinese drama Hachiko grossed $7.82 million in its second weekend, taking its tally to $27.25 million. The film, directed by Ang Xu, revolves around a dog waiting for the return of its owner even 10 years after the owner’s death.
French film The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, directed by Martin Bourboulon, starring François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï, Romain Duris, and Eva Green grossed $5.62 million across 11 territories in its opening weekend.
Slasher sequel Scream VI, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, starring Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Hayden Panettiere and Courteney Cox, earned $4.91 million across 55 territories in its fifth weekend, taking its tally to $161.64 million. The sixth instalment of Scream is the fourth highest-grossing film of the series and is on the verge of surpassing Scream 3 (2000) which earned $162 million.
