The Nun sequel tops the global box office with $85.3 million

The Nun 2, the fifth film in The Conjuring Universe franchise, amassed $85.3 million in its opening weekend ($32.6 million in North America). Directed by Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Curse of La Llorona), the horror film stars Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons, reprising their roles from the first film along with new cast members Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell. The film follows Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak (Bonnie Aarons), the demon nun.
Indian blockbuster Jawan, directed by Atlee, starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, South Indian film industry stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi along with Deepika Padukone in an extended cameo opened with a whopping $62.73 million in its opening weekend ($7.56 million in North American including previews). The vigilante action-drama is on course to surpass the $100 million mark this week and become the second Indian film to achieve the milestone this year after January’s Pathaan that also starred Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
The third instalment of The Equalizer, directed by Antoine Fuqua, starring Denzel Washington grossed $23.6 million worldwide ($12.1 million in North America) in its second weekend, registering a 61% drop from its opening weekend. Also featuring Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo, the film follows Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), a retired US Marine agent living a quiet life in Boston, who returns to action to protect a teenage prostitute Teri aka Alina (Chloë Grace Moretz) from members of the Russian mafia. The Hollywood vigilante action-thriller has grossed $107.66 million at the worldwide box office so far ($61.86 million in North America).
Oppenheimer earned an impressive $22.45 million in its eighth weekend for a total of $890.98 million. The R-rated film, directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role alongside Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh is the fifth highest-grossing film in North America over the weekend with $3 million, taking its domestic tally to $315.13 million.
Chinese film Dust to Dust, directed by Jonathan Li, is the fifth highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office over the weekend with $21.95 million. The crime-thriller, starring Dong Chengpeng and Lam Ka Tung, is based on the true events of the 1995 armed banknote robbery case in China. Including previews, the film has grossed $22.02 million in its opening weekend.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding3 grossed $12.65 million in its opening weekend ($10 million in North America). The third instalment of the romantic comedy film is directed by Nia Vardalos and stars herself alongside John Corbett, Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone, Lainie Kazan, and Andrea Martin.
Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling grossed $11.4 million in its eighth weekend for a worldwide gross of $1.4 billion. In North America, Barbie earned $5.9 million for a domestic total of $620.47 million.
Chinese blockbuster No More Bets earned $8.51 million in its fifth weekend, taking its tally to $516.81 million. The crime-drama , directed by Shen Ao, starring Lay Zhang and Gina Jin is based on a true story of a computer programmer and a female model who are lured by a fake overseas recruitment ad and find themselves trapped in a foreign country.
Biographical sports drama Gran Turismo, directed by Neill Blomkamp, starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, Emelia Hartford, Geri Halliwell Horner, Djimon Hounsou and Josha Stradowski grossed $7.57 million for a worldwide total of $93.38 million.
Animation sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, directed by Jeff Rowe, grossed $6.7 million in its sixth weekend for a total of $161.32 million.
