The latest Indiana Jones instalment tops the global box office with $130M debut

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise, directed by James Mangold, starring Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen and Antonio Banderas lead the worldwide box office with $130 million opening weekend gross across 53 territories ($60 million in North America). The action-adventure film, made with an estimated budget of $300 million, has released to mixed reviews from critics and is likely to struggle to reach its estimated breakeven figure of $600 million.
Chinese film Lost in the Stars, directed by Liu Xiang and Cui Rui, is the second highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office over the weekend with $117.32 million gross, taking its tally to $319.85 million. The mystery-thriller is the remake of the 1990 Soviet film Trap for Lonely Man and follows a man (Zhu Yi Long) whose wife (Janice Man) mysteriously disappears during an overseas trip but suddenly turns up, however her husband claims that the woman in front of him is not his wife and seeks the help of a lawyer (Ni Ni) to solve the mystery.
Pixar’s Elemental, directed by Peter Sohn, earned $41.1 million across 41 territories ($11.3 million in North America) in its third weekend. The animated romantic comedy-drama, made with an estimated budget of $200 million, has grossed $186.77 million so far.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continued its impressive performance in its fifth weekend, earning $25.3 million across 64 territories, taking its tally to $607.27 million. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson and featuring the voices of Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, the animated superhero film is the second highest-grossing film in the North American box office chart this weekend, earning $11.5 million across 3,377 locations. In the film, Spider-Man is catapulted across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.
Chinese drama Never Say Never, directed by and starring Wang Bao Qiang, is the fifth highest-grossing film in the worldwide box office chart with a weekend gross of $25.16 million, taking its tally to $38.51 million.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts earned $21.9 million across 66 territories in its fourth weekend ($7 million at the domestic box office), taking its tally to $381.31 million. The Steven Caple Jr. directorial, starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, revolves around Optimus Prime and the Autobots who join forces to battle Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons. Bumblebee (2018), the previous instalment of the Transformers film series, is currently the lowest grossing film in the franchise with $467.98 million global gross and it remains to be seen if the latest instalment has enough legs to surpass that figure.
The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, starring Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle and Michael Keaton grossed $16.4 million across 79 territories ($5 million in North America) in its third weekend at the global box office. The superhero film released to mixed reviews and has grossed $245.35 million so far against an estimated $200 million budget.
No Hard Feelings, directed by Gene Stupnitsky, starring Jennifer Lawrence (also co-producer) and Andrew Barth Feldman grossed $14 million across 55 territories in its second weekend ($5 million in North America), taking its tally to $49.31 million. The adult comedy, made with an estimated budget of $50 million, has opened to positive reviews from audiences but is being criticised by some news outlets for promoting sexual harassment (in the film, a cash-strapped 32-year-old woman accepts a job to date a 19-year-old introvert before he goes to college).
Animated action-comedy film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, directed by Kirk DeMicco, earned $12.77 million across 68 territories ($5.2 million in North America) in its opening weekend.
The Little Mermaid has grossed $12.35 million at the worldwide box office across 53 territories in its sixth weekend – $5.15 million in North America and $7.2 million in international territories, taking its global tally to $523.8 million. Disney’s musical fantasy film, directed by Rob Marshall, starring Halle Bailey in the titular role along with Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy released to positive reviews with critics praising the performances of the cast but criticising the CGI.
