The Equalizer 3 dominates the worldwide weekend box office with $60.6M debut

The third instalment of Hollywood vigilante action-thriller The Equalizer, directed by Antoine Fuqua, starring Denzel Washington opened with $60.6 million worldwide ($34.5 million in North America). Also featuring Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo, the film follows Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), a retired US Marine agent living a quiet life in Boston, who returns to action to protect a teenage prostitute Teri aka Alina (Chloë Grace Moretz) from members of the Russian mafia.

Last weekend’s topper, Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role, amassed $55.24 million  in its seventh weekend following its release in China where it raked in $32.69 million over its five-day extended weekend. The R-rated film, also starring Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh, has grossed $851.26 million at the worldwide box office. The biographical drama is the fifth highest-grossing film in North America over the weekend with $5.52 million, taking its domestic tally to $308.55 million.

Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, grossed $23.82 million in its seventh weekend for a worldwide gross of $1.38 billion. In North America, Barbie earned $10.62 million for a domestic total of $609.5 million.

Chinese blockbuster No More Bets earned $16.71 million in its fourth weekend, taking its tally to $504.99 million. The crime-drama , directed by Shen Ao, starring Lay Zhang and Gina Jin is based on a true story of a computer programmer and a female model who are lured by a fake overseas recruitment ad and find themselves trapped in a foreign country. 

Biographical sports drama Gran Turismo, directed by Neill Blomkamp, starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, Emelia Hartford, Geri Halliwell Horner, Djimon Hounsou and Josha Stradowski grossed $15.25 million for a worldwide total of $78.96 million.

Blue Beetle dropped 46% in its third weekend, grossing $12.27 million for a worldwide total of $101.87 million. The superhero film, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, starring Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and George Lopez is at No. 3 in USA and Canada with $7.27 million, taking its domestic tally to $56.57 million.

Meg 2: The Trench grossed $11.44 million in its fourth weekend for a total gross of $375.02 million against an estimated $130 million budget. The shark sequel, directed by Ben Wheatley, starring Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels and Cliff Curtis, earned $2.94 million at the North American box office for a domestic total of $78.42 million.

Chinese comedy-drama Papa, directed by Su Liang, collected $7.57 million in its third weekend, taking its tally to $75.42 million.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion grossed $6.2 million, including $1.3 million in North America, in its sixth weekend for a global total of $99.65 million ($64.05 million in North America). The horror-comedy, directed by Justin Simien and starring LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto, is made with an estimated budget of $150 million.
