TEN Indian films compete for Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language nomination

An unprecedented 139 Foreign Language Films from 77 countries are eligible for 78th Golden Globe Awards nomination. The final nominations will be announced on 3 February 2021, and the award ceremony is due to take place on 28 February 2021 at The Beverly Hilton in California. Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) will be hosting the ceremony for the fourth time – the pair had previously hosted the event in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

The below TEN Indian films are in the list of Foreign Film Submissions:

Film: Asuran

Directed by Vetri Maaran (Visaranai /Interrogation) and starring Dhanush (The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir) and Manju Warrier (Aami), “Asuran” is a hard-hitting action drama set in the backdrop of rural India and deals with caste politics in that region. The story revolves around a teenage son of a farmer from an underprivileged caste who kills a rich, upper caste landlord, and the rest of the story deals with the emotions and dilemma of the farmer, a loving father and a pacifist by heart, who needs to save his hot-blooded son from his powerful enemies.

The Disciple” bagged the prestigious FIPRESCI award at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. The Marathi drama is the first Indian film to play in the main competition section at the Venice Film Festival in 19 years since Mira Nair’s “Monsoon Wedding” won the Golden Lion at the festival. 

Written and directed by Chaitanya Tamhane (Court), the drama examines a lifetime journey devoted to the art of Indian classical music.

Prateek Vats’ debut directorial “Eeb Allay Ooo!” revolves around a young migrant in New Delhi, who scores the unusual government job of keeping monkeys away from public buildings, and focuses on his ensuing struggles and disillusionment with the work. The title is a set of distinct sounds used by the protagonist in the film to scare away the monkeys.

Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi’s international film “Harami” is directed by Shyam Madiraju (Eden), who has co-written the screenplay with Shahin Khosravan and also co-producing with Brent Maddock (Tremors), Dori Zuckerman, Gavin Lurie, Mohit Rastogi (Special 26) and Pravesh Kumar Singh.

The film premiered at the Busan Film Festival on 21 October 2020 in South Korea and is the only Indian film out of the 10 films from 9 countries selected for the year’s main competition section (New Horizons).

Set in the backdrop of Mumbai, the plot follows a teenage pickpocket (debutant Rizwan Shaikh) who develops a conscience after one of his targets commits suicide. Newcomer Dhanshree Patil plays the female lead and Emraan Hashmi enacts the role of a crime boss.

Malayalam-language independent film “Jallikattu” was recently chosen as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery (Angamaly Diaries), “Jallikattu” follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village men gathering to hunt down the animal.

The drama won the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award at the 2019 Shanghai International Film Festival.
