Nominations announced for British Independent Film Awards 2020

The nominations for the 23rd edition of the British Independent Film Awards were announced today by Holliday Grainger (The Riot Club) and Micheal Ward (The Old Guard). Twenty-seven British films were nominated across 24 categories, with female directors and filmmakers well-represented in many categories.

Psychological horror film “Saint Maud” dominated the list with 17 nominations including Best British Independent Film, Best Screenplay, Best Director for Rose Glass, Best Breakthrough Producer for Andrea Cornwell and Oliver Kassman, Best Debut Director, Best Debut Screenwriter for Rose Glass, Best Actress for Morfydd Clark, Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Ehle, Best Casting for Kharmel Cochrane, Best Cinematography for Ben Fordesman, Best Costume Design for Tina Kalivas, Best Editing for Mark Towns, Best Production Design for Paulina Rzeszowska, Best Sound, Best Effects and Best Make Up and Hair Design.

Remi Weekes’ horror-thriller “His House”, starring Sope Dirisu, Wunmi Mosaku, Malaika Wakoli-Abigaba and Matt Smith, garnered 16 nominations including Best Director, Best Screenplay, debut and technical categories.

Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age drama “Rocks” starring Bukky Bakray, Kosar Ali and D’angelou Osei Kissiedu amassed 15 nominations including double nominations for stars Bukky Bakray and Kosar Ali in Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and Most Promising Newcomer. D’angleou Osei Kissiedu is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Riz Ahmed has four BIFA nominations including Best Actor, Best Debut Screenwriter and Best Screenplay for Mogul Mowgli and also for “The Long Goodbye”, a short film which he wrote and starred in. Ahmed’s “Mogul Mowgli” co-star Alyy Khan is also recognised in the Supporting Actor category.

The winners will be announced in early February. More details of the event will be released in January.
