The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards in 2021, celebrating the very best in film of the past year.

Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland, which won two Golden Globes including Best Film – Drama and Best Director and Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age drama Rocks, which won five British Independent Film Awards, dominated the BAFTA shortlists with seven nominations.

The Father, Mank, Minari and Promising Young Woman gained six nominations followed by The Dig and The Mauritanian which bagged five nominations.

Another Round, Calm With Horses, Judas and the Black Messiah, News of the World and Sound of Metal amassed four nominations followed by His House, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Soul and The Trial of the Chicago 7, which gained three nominations.

A total of 50 feature films were nominated across 23 categories. The nominations were announced by Aisling Bea and Susan Wokoma at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

In a first for BAFTA, four women have been nominated in the Best Director category. Three of the nominated directors are also nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language category.

The BAFTAs will take place the weekend of 10 and 11 April 2021, and will be broadcast on the BBC.
