Netflix wins 7 Oscars out of 36 nominations
Netflix snagged seven Oscars out of its record thirty-six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards last night, an improved performance when compared to 2020 when the streaming giant won just two awards out of its twenty-four nominations.
David Fincher’s black-and-white film Mank, which had 10 nominations, claimed two Oscars including Best Cinematography for Erik Messerschmidt and Best Production Design for Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale.
Chadwick Boseman’s swansong Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which bagged five nominations, won two awards – Best Costume Design nomination for Ann Roth and Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson.
My Octopus Teacher fetched the Best Documentary Feature Oscar for Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed and Craig Foster.
If Anything Happens I Love You by Will McCormack and Michael Govier won the Best Animated Short Film and Two Distant Strangers by Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe won the Best Live-Action Short.
Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, which bagged six nominations, failed to make the cut in the categories it was nominated for.
