Netflix makes history by bagging 36 Oscar nominations

Streaming giant Netflix has made history by earning 36 Academy Award nominations – the most of any studio this year. Last year, the streamer bagged 24 nominations but only won 2 Oscars.

As predicted, David Fincher’s critically-acclaimed black-and-white film Mank fetched Netflix the most Academy Award nominations (10), akin to what “The Irishman” did for the studio earlier this year.

The categories Mank was nominated include Best Direction for David Fincher, Best Picture, Best Lead Actor for Gary Oldman, Best Supporting Actress for Amanda Seyfried, Best Cinematography for Erik Messerschmidt, Best Costume Design for Trish Summerville, Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Gigi Williams, Kimberley Spiteri and Colleen LaBaff, Best Original Score for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Best Production Design for Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale and Best Sound for Ren Klyce, Jeremy Molod, David Parker, Nathan Nance and Drew Kunin.

Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 bagged six nominations including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay for Sorkin, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Sacha Baron Cohen, Best Cinematography for Phedon Papamichael, Best Film Editing for Alan Baumgarten and Best Original Song for Daniel Pemberton (music) and Daniel Pemberton and Celeste Waite (lyrics),

Chadwick Boseman’s swansong Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom fetched the actor a posthumous Best Lead Actor nomination. The film also bagged a Best Lead Actress nomination for Viola Davis, Best Costume Design nomination for Ann Roth, Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson and Best Production Design for Mark Ricker; Set Decoration: Karen O’Hara and Diana Stoughton – making it five nominations overall for the film.

Kornel Mundruczo’s Pieces of a Woman earned Best Lead Actress nomination for Vanessa Kirby, and George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky got a nomination nod in the Best Visual Effects category for Matthew Kasmir, Christopher Lawrence, Max Solomon and David Watkins.

Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods was nominated for Best Original Score for Terence Blanchard. Ramin Bahrani’s The White Tiger won him a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Over the Moon was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film and Crip Camp, a documentary from Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions, got a nod for Best Documentary Feature nomination.
