Killers of the Flower Moon leads the worldwide weekend box office chart, India’s Leo takes third spot

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone amassed $44 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend. The epic western crime saga opened at the second position at the North American box office with $23 million. Set in the backdrop of 1920s Oklahoma, the film – based on a true story – focuses on Native American Osage members who became rich overnight after oil was discovered on their land. Their wealth immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder.
Concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, directed by Sam Wrench, documenting the latest concert tour of the singer-songwriter grossed $41.5 million in its second weekend, registering a drop of 67.57% from its opening weekend, for a total of $164.78 million. The film, which became the highest-grossing concert movie of all-time in its opening weekend, continued to lead the North American box office chart for the second successive weekend with $31 million for a domestic total of $129.78 million.
Indian Tamil blockbuster Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, starring Vijay, Trisha, Sanjay Dutt and Arjun Sarja grossed an impressive $31.24 million in its opening weekend for a total gross of $48.54 million (the film released on Thursday). Based on the 1997 novel A History of Violence by John Wagner, the action-drama revolves around a middle-aged coffee shop owner Parthiban (Vijay) living a peaceful life with his wife Sathya (Trisha) and kids in the snowy northern part of India. A group of gangster brothers Anthony (Sanjay Dutt) and Harold (Arjun Sarja) suddenly start hounding Parthiban and his family by claiming Parthiban is Anthony’s son Leo from south India who is presumed to have died more than twenty years ago. The film earned $4.68 million in North America over its extended opening weekend.
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie dropped to the fourth spot on the chart with $16.15 million in its fourth weekend for a total gross of $148.36 million. The Canadian animated superhero comedy sequel, directed by Cal Brunker, featuring an ensemble voice cast of Christian Corrao, Luxton Handspiker, Callum Shoniker, Ron Pardo, Mckenna Grace, Taraji P. Henson, Marsai Martin, Christian Convery, Kim Kardashian, Chris Rock, North West, Saint West, Lil Rel Howery, Serena Williams, James Marsden, Kristen Bell and Finn Lee-Epp took the fourth spot at the North American weekend box office chart with $4.45 million for a total domestic gross of $56.06 million.
Animated musical-comedy Trolls Band Together, directed by Walt Dohrn, featuring the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Eric André, Kid Cudi, Daveed Diggs, Andrew Rannells, Amy Schumer, Troye Sivan, Kenan Thompson, NSYNC and Camila Cabello grossed $14.32 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend. The film is slated to release in the United States on 17 November.
The Exorcist: Believer grossed $13.76 million in its third weekend for a total of $107.59 million. The sixth instalment in The Exorcist franchise, directed by David Gordon Green, starring Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O‘Neill, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Ann Dowd, Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair, follows a photographer (Leslie Odom Jr.) who is forced to confront an evil after his daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) and her best friend Katherine (Olivia O’Neill) are possessed. In North America, the film earned $5.6 million over the weekend for a domestic total of $54.2 million.
Chinese film Only The River Flows grossed $12.47 million in its opening weekend in mainland China. The neo-noir art film, directed by Wei Shujun, starring Zhu Yilong, follows police chief Ma Zhe as he investigates a series of murders in a riverside town in rural China in the 1990s.
Chinese film Under The Light, directed by Zhang Yimou, starring Lei Jiayin, Zhang Guoli, Yu Hewei, Zhou Dongyu, Joan Chen and Sun Yizhou grossed $6.88 million in its fourth weekend for a total gross of $173.11 million. The urban crime-drama follows officers Su Jianming (Lei Jiayin) and Li Huilin (Zhou Dongyu) who investigate a crime involving wealthy businessman Li Zhitian (Yu Hewei) and uncover layers of political and business collusion.
The Creator, directed by Gareth Edwards, starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson and Allison Janney grossed $6.7 million in its fourth weekend for a total gross of $90.35 million. The science-fiction action film, set in the backdrop of a dystopian world in 2070, follows an ex-special forces agent Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) who is recruited to hunt down and kill the “Creator”, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to destroy mankind. Joshua discovers that the world-ending weapon he has been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles). The Creator took the seventh spot at the North American box office with $2.6 million for a domestic total of $36.75 million.
Chinese film The Volunteers: To The War, the first part of the Volunteers trilogy, grossed $5.3 million in its fourth weekend for a total gross of $101.22 million. Directed by Chen Kaige and starring an ensemble cast of Xin Baiqing, Zhang Songwen, Huang Xiaoming, Zhang Ziyi, Zhu Yawen, Zhang Zifeng, Yin Fang and Wang Chuanjun, the film follows the Chinese People’s Volunteers Army as they enter North Korea and kick off the “Resist US, Aid Korea” war in 1950s.
