Indian film releases are pushed back as Covid cases surge across the country
Rana Daggubati (Ghazi) – Sai Pallavi (Premam) starrer Virata Parvam, written and directed by Venu Udugula, is the latest film to push back its release date following a surge in coronavirus cases in India in the past week. The Telugu film was scheduled to release on 30 April 2021.
Akshay Kumar – Katrina Kaif starrer Sooryavanshi, directed by Rohit Shetty, that was supposed to release on 30 April 2021, was postponed indefinitely due to rise in coronavirus cases and lockdown in Maharashtra.
Kangana Ranaut’s multilingual political drama Thalaivi and Amitabh Bachchan – Emraan Hashmi starrer Chehre are also among the high-profile films that have cancelled their scheduled releases due to the second wave of the pandemic in India.
In the last week of March, the Maharashtra state government had ordered all cinemas to close before 8 PM effective from 29 March until 15 April to curb the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the state. The administration has now further tightened the restrictions and imposed “Section 144” of Indian Law which prohibits the gathering of five or more persons from 14 April until 1 May.
