Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 tops the worldwide weekend box office with $282.1 million opening

The third instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn, topped the worldwide box office chart with an opening weekend gross of $282.1 million across 53 territories – $114 million in the USA and Canada and $168.1 million in international territories. The superhero film features an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, Lloyd Kaufman and Sylvester Stallone.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, pushed to the second spot after spending four weeks on the top, continued its impressive performance in its fifth weekend with $68.88 million gross across 81 territories ($18.6 million in North America). The animated adaptation of Mario is the highest grossing film of 2023 with a worldwide gross of $1.15 billion.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fifth film since the pandemic to enter the $1 billion club after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.32 billion).

Chinese road comedy-drama Godspeed, directed by Yi Xiaoxing, raked in $15.44 million in its second weekend across 3 territories, taking its tally to $98.73 million.

Evil Dead Rise amassed $14.83 million across 64 territories, including $5.73 million in North America, in its third weekend for a worldwide gross of $114.8 million against an estimated budget of $15 million. The Lee Cronin-directorial, starring Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, is now the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing its predecessor Evil Dead (2013) which grossed $97.5 million.

Chinese military film Born to Fly, directed by Liu Xiaoshi and starring Wang Yibo, Hu Jun and Zhou Dongyu, is the fifth highest-grossing film at the global box office over the weekend with a total gross of $11.44 million across 6 territories, taking its tally to $92.85 million.

John Wick: Chapter 4 earned $8.05 million including $2.35 million in North America in its seventh weekend. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård and Laurence Fishburne, the action-thriller has grossed $416.65 million so far and is the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

Black Iron Submarine, the twenty-sixth film in the Detective Conan franchise, took the seventh spot with $6.75 million gross in Japan. The Anime film has earned $65.1 million so far in Japan in a little over 3 weeks and is yet to release in other territories.

Dungeons & Dragons grossed $3.81 million at the global box office across 60 territories, including $1.51 million at the North American box office in its sixth weekend. The heist action-comedy film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant has earned $202.53 million so far against its estimated $150 million budget.

Japanese film Tokyo MER: Mobile Emergency Room The Movie, directed by Aya Matsuki, grossed $3.628 million in its second weekend, taking its tally to $9.54 million.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. earned $3.38 million in its second weekend in North America, taking its total gross to $12.64 million. Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig and starring Rachel McAdams, Elle Graham, Benny Safdie and Kathy Bates, the coming-of-age period comedy-drama is scheduled to release in international territories later this month.
