Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leads the worldwide box office for second consecutive weekend

The third instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn, dominated the worldwide box office for the second consecutive weekend with a gross of $152.4 million across 53 territories – $60.5 million in the USA and Canada and $91.9 million in international territories. The superhero film features an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, Lloyd Kaufman and Sylvester Stallone.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie continued its impressive performance in its sixth weekend with $39.13 million gross across 81 territories ($13 million in North America). The animated adaptation of Mario is the highest grossing film of 2023 with a worldwide gross of $1.21 billion. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fifth film since the pandemic to enter the $1 billion club after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.32 billion).

Chinese road comedy-drama Godspeed, directed by Yi Xiaoxing, raked in $13.12 million in its third weekend across 3 territories, taking its tally to $120.27 million.

Evil Dead Rise amassed $10.42 million across 66 territories, including $3.73 million in North America, in its fourth weekend for a worldwide gross of $131.79 million against an estimated budget of $15 million. The Lee Cronin-directorial, starring Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, is the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing its predecessor Evil Dead (2013) which grossed $97.5 million.

Book Club: The Next Chapter grossed $9.64 million across 36 territories in its opening weekend. The sequel to 2018 romantic-comedy film Book Club is directed by Bill Holderman and stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen.

Chinese military film Born to Fly, directed by Liu Xiaoshi and starring Wang Yibo, Hu Jun and Zhou Dongyu, is the sixth highest-grossing film at the global box office over the weekend with a total gross of $8.98 million across 8 territories, taking its tally to $106.7 million.

John Wick: Chapter 4 earned $4.61 million including $1.93 million in North America in its eighth weekend. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård and Laurence Fishburne, the action-thriller has grossed $423.4 million so far and is the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

Romantic comedy Love Again, directed by James C. Strouse, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan and Celine Dion grossed $4.05 million across 36 territories, taking its total gross to an underwhelming $7.6 million against an estimated $9 million budget.

Black Iron Submarine, the twenty-sixth film in the Detective Conan franchise, earned $3.82 million over the weekend for a total gross of $84.09 million in Japan in a little over 4 weeks. The Anime film is yet to release in other territories.

The Pope’s Exorcist, directed by Julius Avery, starring Russell Crowe raked in $3.14 million across 61 territories in its fifth weekend. The horror film has grossed $70.2 million so far against an estimated $18 million budget.
