Disney’s The Little Mermaid tops the global box office with $163.8M opening weekend gross

The Little Mermaid is projected to amass $163.8 million at the worldwide box office across 52 territories in its opening weekend – $95.5 million in North America and $68.3 million in international territories. Disney’s musical fantasy film, directed by Rob Marshall, starring Halle Bailey in the titular role along with Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy has released to positive reviews with critics praising the performances of the cast but criticising the CGI.
Fast X, the eleventh instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise, raked in $110.27 million across 85 territories ($23 million in North America) in its second weekend, registering a 65% from its opening weekend. The action-comedy, directed by Louis Leterrier and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron, has earned $507.26 million so far. The film is over $200 million short of its predecessor F9 (2021), which earned $726.2 million globally.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, directed by James Gunn, grossed $45.05 million across 53 territories – $19.95 million in the USA and Canada and $25.1 million in international territories – in its fourth weekend, taking its global tally to $731.02 million. The superhero film features an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, Lloyd Kaufman and Sylvester Stallone. The third instalment is still $138 million short of its predecessor Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), which grossed $869 million at the worldwide box office.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie continued its strong performance in its eighth weekend with $19.37 million gross across 82 territories ($6.27 million in North America). The animated adaptation of Mario is the highest grossing film of 2023 with a worldwide gross of $1.27 billion. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fifth film since the pandemic to enter the $1 billion club after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.32 billion).
Chinese road comedy-drama Godspeed, directed by Yi Xiaoxing, raked in $6.86 million across 7 territories in its fifth weekend, taking its tally to $146.61 million.
Action-comedy The Machine, directed by Peter Atencio, starring Bert Kreischer grossed $4.9 million in its opening weekend in North America. Distributor Sony has not reported the international gross of the film yet.
About my Father grossed $4.58 million across 16 territories ($4.25 million in North America) in its opening weekend. Directed by Laura Terruso and starring Sebastian Maniscalco (also co-writer), Robert De Niro and Leslie Bibb, the comedy-drama revolves around Sebastian and his Italian-immigrant father Salvo (Robert De Niro) who decide to spend a weekend Sebastian’s all-American girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb) and her parents leading to a clash of cultures.
Japanese animated film Sword Art Online: Progressive – Scherzo of Deep Night is the eighth highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office over the weekend with $3.79 million across 7 territories, taking its tally to $15.58 million.
Kandahar, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, starring Gerard Butler (also co-producer), Navid Negahban and Ali Fazal grossed a disappointing $3.64 million in its opening weekend across 11 territories ($2.41 million in North America). The action-thriller follows an undercover CIA operative Tom Harris (Gerard Butler) in Afghanistan who has to flee the country with his translator after his identity and mission are exposed.
Japanese anime film Rohan Kishibe Goes to the Louvre grossed $3.04 million in its opening weekend in Japan.
