The British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) has announced the 2020 award winners for its nine film craft categories. The nominations were announced on 9 December 2020.

Rose Glass’ psychological horror film “Saint Maud”, which topped the BIFA nominations with 17, won Best Cinematography for Ben Fordesman.

Remi Weekes’ horror-thriller “His House”, which garnered 16 nominations in total, won the Best Effects for Pedro Sabrosa and Stefano Pepin, and Best Production Design for Jacqueline Abrahams.

Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age drama “Rocks”, which amassed 15 nominations, won Best Casting for Lucy Pardee. Casting for this film was done through a collaborative process that involved workshops with young untrained actors to explore their characters.

Philippa Lowthorpe’s comedy-drama “Misbehaviour” won awards for Best Costume Design for Charlotte Walter and Best Make Up & Hair for Jill Sweeney.

Yorgos Lamprinos was awarded Best Editing for his work on Florian Zeller’s “The Father”, a film about an aging Welshman (Anthony Hopkins) who has to deal with his progressing memory loss.

Best Sound went to Nick Ryan, Ben Baird and Sara De Oliveira Lima for “The Reason I Jump”, directed by Jerry Rothwell, that focussed on autism spectrum disorder.

Bassam Tariq’s “Mogul Mowgli” – that follows a young rapper (Riz Ahmed) whose career is derailed by an autoimmune disease – won Best Music for Paul Corley.

These categories were introduced in 2017 to better recognise the wealth of exceptional talent working on British independent films.
