China’s Lost in the Stars leads the worldwide box office

Chinese film Lost in the Stars, directed by Liu Xiang and Cui Rui, is the highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office over the weekend with $70.42 million gross for a total gross of $97.6 million. The mystery-thriller released on 21 June, Wednesday and topped the Chinese daily box office for five days in a row. Lost in the Stars, the remake of the 1990 Soviet film Trap for Lonely Man, follows a man (Zhu Yi Long) whose wife (Janice Man) mysteriously disappears during an overseas trip but suddenly turns up, however her husband claims that the woman in front of him is not his wife and seeks the help of a lawyer (Ni Ni) to solve the mystery.
Pixar’s Elemental, directed by Peter Sohn, earned $49.76 million across 41 territories ($18.46 million in North America) in its second weekend. The animated romantic comedy-drama, made with an estimated budget of $200 million, has grossed a disappointing $121.11 million so far and is unlikely to break even.
Last weekend’s topper The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, starring Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle and Michael Keaton grossed $41.86 million across 79 territories ($15.26 million in North America) in its second weekend at the global box office, registering a fall of 68% from its opening weekend. The superhero film released to mixed reviews and has grossed $210.94 million so far against an estimated $200 million budget.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continued its impressive performance in its fourth weekend, earning $41.3 million across 64 territories, taking its tally to $560.25 million. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson and featuring the voices of Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, the animated superhero film returned to the top of the box office chart in North America earning $19.3 million across 3,875 locations. In the film, Spider-Man is catapulted across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts earned $37.2 million across 70 territories in its third weekend ($11.6 million at the domestic box office), taking its tally to $341.24 million. The Steven Caple Jr. directorial, starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, revolves around Optimus Prime and the Autobots who join forces to battle Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons. Bumblebee (2018), the previous instalment of the Transformers film series, is currently the lowest grossing film in the franchise with $467.98 million global gross and it remains to be seen if the latest instalment has enough legs to surpass that figure.
No Hard Feelings, directed by Gene Stupnitsky, starring Jennifer Lawrence (also co-producer) and Andrew Barth Feldman grossed $24.6 million across 49 territories in its opening weekend ($15.1 million in North America). The adult comedy, made with an estimated budget of $50 million, has opened to positive reviews from audiences but is being criticised by some news outlets for promoting sexual harassment (in the film, a cash-strapped 32-year-old woman accepts a job to date a 19-year-old introvert before he goes to college).
The Little Mermaid has raked in $18.07 million at the worldwide box office across 53 territories in its fifth weekend – $8.67 million in North America and $9.4 million in international territories, taking its global tally to $499.34 million. Disney’s musical fantasy film, directed by Rob Marshall, starring Halle Bailey in the titular role along with Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy released to positive reviews with critics praising the performances of the cast but criticising the CGI.
Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City grossed $12.94 million across 36 territories ($9 million in North America) for a total gross of $16.69 million.
Chinese romantic-drama Love Never Ends, directed by Han Yan, earned $11.7 million between Friday to Sunday, taking its tally to $23.45 million since its release on 21 June, Wednesday.
Fast X, the eleventh instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise, earned $6.36 million across 85 territories ($1.08 million in North America) in its sixth weekend. The action-comedy, directed by Louis Leterrier and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron, has earned $689.25 million so far. The film is under $38 million short of its predecessor F9 (2021), which earned $726.2 million globally.
