Bafta Film Awards 2021: Winners of the first night

The EE British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the 2021 Film Award winners for the technical categories last night. The winners of the main categories including Best Film, Best Leading Actress and Best Leading Actor will be announced tonight (12 April).

Critically-acclaimed Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won two awards including the Best Costume Design for Ann Roth and Best Make-up and Hair for Matiki Anoff, Larry M Cherry, Sergio Lopez-Rivera and Mia Neal.

Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age drama “Rocks” won the Best Casting for Lucy Pardee – her second win this year after the British Independent Film Award for the same film in January.

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet won the Best Visual Effects, David Fincher’s Mank got the nod for Best Production Design and Riz Ahmed-starrer Sound of Metal bagged the Best Sound awards.

Palestinian short film The Present, co-written and directed by Farah Nabulsi, and The Owl and the Pussycat by Mole Hill won the Best British Short Film and Best British Short Animation categories respectively.

Actor Noel Clarke (Bulletproof, Doctor Who) was presented with the outstanding British contribution to cinema award.

The event was hosted by British radio and television presenter Clara Amfo from an empty Royal Albert Hall in London. She started the event by paying tribute to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away aged 99 on Friday.
