Ponniyin Selvan (1950 – 1955), written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, is considered by many to be the greatest novel ever written in Tamil literature. The novel follows the journey of young prince Arulmozhi Varman, who later goes on to become the Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I (947 CE – 1014 CE).
Director Mani Ratnam (Roja, Bombay) reportedly first attempted to adapt the novel into a film in early 1990s but was unsuccessful back then due to financial constraints. The director revived the adaptation in 2019 after securing funding from Lyca Productions and is also co-producing the epic film under his production banner Madras Talkies (Putham Pudhu Kaalai).
Ponniyin Selvan: 1 features an ensemble cast that includes Vikram (Anniyan), Jayam Ravi (Comali), Karthi (Kaithi), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (The Mistress of Spices), Trisha Krishnan (Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa), Aishwarya Lekshmi (Jagame Thandhiram), Sobhita Dhulipala (Goodachari), Prakash Raj (KGF Chapter 2), R. Parthiban (Iravin Nizhal), Prabhu (Chandramukhi), R. Sarathkumar (Pachaikili Muthucharam), Vikram Prabhu (Kumki), Jayaram (Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo) and Rahman (Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru).
The music for the film is composed by A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), continuing his 30-year-collaboration with mentor Mani Ratnam who introduced the composer with Roja (1992).
Ponniyin Selvan: 1 is releasing in Tamil (original), Hindi (dubbed) and Telugu (dubbed) in the UK on Friday, 30 September 2022. The film is age-rated 15 for “strong violence” by the BBFC.
