Transformers leads the global box office with $170.5 million debut

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts amassed $170.5 million across 69 territories in its opening weekend at the worldwide box office ($60.5 million across 3,678 locations in the USA and Canada). The Steven Caple Jr. directorial, starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, revolves around Optimus Prime and the Autobots who join forces to battle Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons. The science-fiction action film released to mixed reviews from critics and is likely to lose the top spot to The Flash next weekend.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse earned an impressive $102.42 million across 60 territories in its second weekend, registering a little under 50% drop, taking its tally to $389.94 million. The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, featuring the voices of Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld grossed 55.42 million across 4,332 locations at the North American box office. In the animated film, Spider-Man is catapulted across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

The Little Mermaid has raked in $52.69 million at the worldwide box office across 53 territories in its third weekend (registering a 36% drop from its second weekend) – $22.79 million in North America and $29.9 million in international territories, taking its global tally to $414.21 million. Disney’s musical fantasy film, directed by Rob Marshall, starring Halle Bailey in the titular role along with Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy released to positive reviews with critics praising the performances of the cast but criticising the CGI.

Fast X, the eleventh instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise, earned $25.78 million across 85 territories ($5.2 million in North America) in its fourth weekend. The action-comedy, directed by Louis Leterrier and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron, has earned $652.78 million so far. The film is $74 million short of its predecessor F9 (2021), which earned $726.2 million globally.

South Korean action-crime sequel The Roundup: No Way Out is the fifth highest film at the worldwide box office with a weekend gross of $12.38 million across 7 territories ($155.67k in North America), taking its global tally to $59.58 million. Directed by Lee Sang-yong and starring Ma Dong-seok, Lee Joon-hyuk and Munetaka Aoki, the film is the sequel to The Outlaws (2017) and The Roundup (2022), and is also the third instalment of Crime City film series.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, directed by James Gunn, grossed $13.72 million across 53 territories – $7.02 million in the USA and Canada and $6.7 million in international territories – in its sixth weekend, taking its global tally to $805.9 million. The superhero film features an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, Lloyd Kaufman and Sylvester Stallone. The third instalment is still $63 million short of its predecessor Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), which grossed $869 million at the worldwide box office.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie continued to draw audiences to the cinemas in its tenth weekend with $7.88 million gross across 82 territories ($2.12 million in North America). The animated adaptation of Mario is the highest grossing film of 2023 with a worldwide gross of $1.31 billion. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fifth film since the pandemic to enter the $1 billion club after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.32 billion).

The Boogeyman reboot, based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story of the same name, grossed $11.11 million across 51 territories ($6.91 million in North America) in its second weekend, taking its tally to $39.63 million. Directed by Rob Savage and starring Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair and David Dastmalchian, the horror film released to mixed reviews from critics and its revenue from ticket sales over its first weekend is underwhelming when compared to other horror films that made a killing at the box office this year (M3GANThe Pope’s ExorcistEvil Dead Rise, etc).

Chinese road comedy-drama Godspeed, directed by Yi Xiaoxing, earned $3.21 million across 4 territories in its seventh weekend, taking its tally to $161.28 million.

A restored version of Japanese animated classic Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) by animation legend Miyazaki Hayao re-released in China on 1 June and grossed $2.5 million over the weekend for a total gross of $17.56 million.
