Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens with a whopping $208.6 million at the global box office

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse topped the worldwide box office chart with a humungous $208.6 million opening weekend gross across 60 territories. The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, featuring the voices of Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld also dominated the North American box office with 120.5 million gross across 4,313 locations. In the animated film, Spider-Man is catapulted across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.
The Little Mermaid has amassed $82.9 million at the worldwide box office across 53 territories in its second weekend (registering a 50% drop from its opening weekend) – $40.6 million in North America and $42.3 million in international territories, taking its global tally to $326.7 million. Disney’s musical fantasy film, directed by Rob Marshall, starring Halle Bailey in the titular role along with Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy released to positive reviews with critics praising the performances of the cast but criticising the CGI.
Fast X, the eleventh instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise, raked in $50.64 million across 85 territories ($9.24 million in North America) in its third weekend. The action-comedy, directed by Louis Leterrier and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron, has earned $603.27 million so far. The film is over $120 million short of its predecessor F9 (2021), which earned $726.2 million globally.
South Korean action-crime sequel The Roundup: No Way Out is the fourth highest film at the worldwide box office with a weekend gross of $25.38 million across 4 territories ($200k in North America), taking its global tally to $27.91 million. Directed by Lee Sang-yong and starring Ma Dong-seok, Lee Joon-hyuk and Munetaka Aoki, the film is the sequel to The Outlaws (2017) and The Roundup (2022), and is also the third instalment of Crime City film series.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, directed by James Gunn, grossed $22.6 million across 53 territories – $10.2 million in the USA and Canada and $12.4 million in international territories – in its fifth weekend, taking its global tally to $780.11 million. The superhero film features an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, Lloyd Kaufman and Sylvester Stallone. The third instalment is still a little under $90 million short of its predecessor Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), which grossed $869 million at the worldwide box office.
The Boogeyman reboot, based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story of the same name, grossed $20 million across 20 territories ($12.3 million in North America) in its opening weekend. Directed by Rob Savage and starring Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair and David Dastmalchian, the horror film released to mixed reviews from critics and its revenue from ticket sales over its first weekend is underwhelming when compared to other horror films that made a killing at the box office this year (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Evil Dead Rise, etc).
The Super Mario Bros. Movie continued to draw audiences to the cinemas in its ninth weekend with $11.76 million gross across 82 territories ($6.27 million in North America). The animated adaptation of Mario is the highest grossing film of 2023 with a worldwide gross of $1.3 billion. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fifth film since the pandemic to enter the $1 billion club after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.32 billion).
A restored version of Japanese animated classic Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) by animation legend Miyazaki Hayao re-released in China on 1 June and raked in $6.01 million over the weekend for a total gross of $12.77 million.
Another Japanese animation Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Sky Utopia grossed $4.15 million in mainland China, taking its global gross to $42.33 million.
Chinese road comedy-drama Godspeed, directed by Yi Xiaoxing, earned $3.88 million across 4 territories in its sixth weekend, taking its tally to $154.99 million.
