Fast X debuts with $319M at the worldwide box office

Fast X, the eleventh instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise, raked in $319 million across 85 territories ($67.5 million in North America) in its opening weekend. The action-comedy, directed by Louis Leterrier, features an ensemble cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, directed by James Gunn, grossed $80.78 million across 53 territories – $31.98 million in the USA and Canada and $48.8 million in international territories – in its third weekend, taking its global tally to $659.12 million. The superhero film features an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, Lloyd Kaufman and Sylvester Stallone.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie continued its impressive performance in its seventh weekend with $26.94 million gross across 81 territories ($9.8 million in North America). The animated adaptation of Mario is the highest grossing film of 2023 with a worldwide gross of $1.24 billion. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the film revolves around brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who are transported to an alternate universe and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Koopas, led by King Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fifth film since the pandemic to enter the $1 billion club after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion), Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.32 billion).

Chinese road comedy-drama Godspeed, directed by Yi Xiaoxing, raked in $10.33 million in its fourth weekend across 6 territories, taking its tally to $135.44 million.

Chinese romantic-comedy Too Beautiful to Lie, directed by Yang Yuanhan, based on a 2004 Korean film of the same name grossed $6.21 million in its opening weekend in mainland China, leading the country’s weekend box office chart.

Evil Dead Rise amassed $5.77 million across 65 territories, including $2.37million in North America, in its fifth weekend for a worldwide gross of $141.1 million. The Lee Cronin-directorial, starring Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, is the highest-grossing film in the Evil Dead franchise.

Book Club: The Next Chapter grossed $4.7 million across 36 territories in its second weekend, taking its total to $19.52 million. The sequel to 2018 romantic-comedy film Book Club is directed by Bill Holderman and stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen.

Chinese military film Born to Fly, directed by Liu Xiaoshi and starring Wang Yibo, Hu Jun and Zhou Dongyu, is the eighth highest-grossing film at the global box office over the weekend with a total gross of $4.08 million across 6 territories, taking its tally to $113.37 million.

Black Iron Submarine, the twenty-sixth film in the Detective Conan franchise, earned $2.68 million over the weekend for a total gross of $88.54 million in Japan in a little over 5 weeks. The Anime film is yet to release in other territories.

John Wick: Chapter 4 earned $2.55 million including $1.33 million in North America in its ninth weekend. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård and Laurence Fishburne, the action-thriller has grossed $430.19 million so far and is the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The success of the fourth instalment has helped the John Wick franchise surpass the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office.
